The Power of Self-Compassion in Healing

Many people arrive in therapy already carrying a long list of ways they believe they have fallen short. Self-compassion offers a different starting place: the willingness to meet yourself with the same patience and care you might offer someone you love.
Compassion is not complacency
Self-compassion does not mean ignoring pain or avoiding responsibility. It means telling the truth about what is difficult without adding shame to the experience. When the nervous system feels safer, it becomes easier to notice patterns, repair relationships, and choose a next step.
A practice, not a personality trait
Try pausing when you notice harsh self-talk. Name what is happening, acknowledge that struggle is part of being human, and ask what support would be helpful right now. Small moments of kindness can create room for lasting change.
